The Blood of Dawnwalker Ambrus Boss Guide

Beat Ambrus in The Blood of Dawnwalker with poison-route timing, attack cues, Scarlet Shield counters, rewards, and kill-versus-drain choices.

Verified answer

Quick answer

To fight Ambrus, finish Smoke and Ashes, complete enough Ambrus Court Activities to anger him, investigate his challenge south of Maragir, then ring the bell at the ruined castle at night. The optional Bittersweet Toast route can poison him before the duel and make the encounter much safer.

During the fight, Perfect Block and Perfect Riposte his normal attacks, dodge the three unblockable strings, stop attacking while Scarlet Shield is active because hits heal him, and defend through the late blood-red teleport flurry. Draining Ambrus grants Scarlet Shield; killing him avoids that Corruption route while still leaving his weapon and armor loot.

Evidence checked September 12, 2026. The Gilded Gauntlet route, poison option, combat cues, Scarlet Shield behavior, and post-fight choices are checked against current launch walkthroughs. No fixed boss HP, fake weakness, or mandatory level requirement is presented.

How to unlock the Ambrus boss fight

Ambrus is one of Brencis's three major Court targets and is usually the first boyar players encounter after leaving the prologue regions. You do not simply walk into an arena and fight him. First, you need to disrupt enough of his Court operations to push his Anger state high enough to trigger The Gilded Gauntlet.

The reliable progression path is:

  1. Finish Smoke and Ashes after the prologue.
  2. Complete Ambrus Court Activities in his regions until his Court portrait shows that he is angered.
  3. Go to the new quest marker south of Maragir in the Maragir Wealds.
  4. Investigate the crucified victim and Ambrus's message.
  5. Decide whether to take the optional The Bittersweet Toast poison route.
  6. Go to the ruined castle at night and ring the bell to start the duel.

PowerPyx documents 14 Ambrus Court Activities and notes that you do not need to clear every one before the boss quest appears. Those activities advance story time, so pair this route with the Best Quest Order instead of clearing every Court marker blindly.

The Gilded Gauntlet timing

The duel is a night-only encounter. PowerPyx lists two time segments when you ring the bell and summon Ambrus.

The quest interface may make the night requirement look like a normal failure timer, but the current walkthrough distinguishes the two: you need darkness to start the encounter, while simply not arriving immediately does not automatically fail The Gilded Gauntlet.

The important exception is the optional poison plan. Once The Bittersweet Toast is completed, Iulian's condition becomes genuinely time-sensitive. PowerPyx reports a 48-segment / three-day window to reach the duel while the plan can still work.

If you choose the poison route, finish your preparation before completing the ritual rather than spending several days shopping, training, or clearing unrelated quests afterward.

Should you poison Ambrus?

Poisoning Ambrus is optional, but it is the safest route if the duel is giving you trouble.

After investigating Ambrus's challenge, Iulian Codrin's servant can lead you into The Bittersweet Toast. The plan is to poison Iulian's blood so that Ambrus poisons himself when he feeds before the duel.

At the duel, Ambrus becomes suspicious and may try to make Coen drink first. Current walkthroughs confirm that responses such as "Letting a peasant drink first? What kind of boyar are you?" push Ambrus into drinking from Iulian instead.

A successfully poisoned Ambrus is much easier because:

  • his health drains during the fight;
  • he periodically doubles over in pain, creating safe openings;
  • his self-healing becomes less effective.

There is a tradeoff. PC Gamer notes that if Coen later drinks poisoned blood, he can become poisoned too. If your plan is to drain Ambrus after the duel for Scarlet Shield, preserve enough health and a save before the encounter so you are not forced into a recovery problem you did not plan for.

If you prefer the cleanest duel, skip the poison route and fight him at full strength.

Best preparation for Ambrus

The encounter happens at night, so plan around Swordmastery plus Vampirism, not a daytime Witchcraft rotation.

The most useful preparation is mechanical rather than numerical:

  • enough stamina to survive repeated defensive sequences;
  • reliable Perfect Blocks and Perfect Ripostes;
  • at least one Activation Charge available for a punish window;
  • a manual save before the duel;
  • lock-on enabled so Ambrus's shadowsteps are easier to track.

If you are still building your first combat core, use the Best Early Skills. The universal Swordmastery foundation on that page is particularly relevant here because this fight rewards stamina management, directional defense, and disciplined counterattacks.

Do not chase an invented "required level" from an unsourced boss table. Your ability to read his unblockables matters more than a fake level threshold.

Ambrus attack patterns

Ambrus mixes normal sword pressure with three important unblockable sequences. The current PowerPyx walkthrough gives consistent visual cues for each one.

Spinning shadowstep into overhead slash

From range, Ambrus enters a ready stance, begins a spin, then shadowsteps toward Coen and comes down with an overhead strike.

Answer: dodge backward when he reappears. Do not try to force a block on the unblockable portion.

Shadowstep into rising slash

He leans into a shadowstep without the full spin, then reappears with an upward cut.

Answer: dodge left or right. This is one of the better punish windows because he has a short recovery after the slash.

Figure-eight sword advance

At medium or close range, he swings the blade in a figure-eight pattern while advancing.

Answer: create distance with repeated dodges instead of trying to trade through the string. If you begin too close, escape sideways and reset rather than mashing attacks.

Normal sword pressure

His ordinary attacks are where the duel becomes much more manageable. PowerPyx specifically recommends Perfect Block → Perfect Riposte as the reliable way to break through his defense.

The core rhythm is simple: defend the normal sequence, punish the clean opening, then stop. Long greedy combos make it easier for him to shadowstep away and reset into another unblockable.

Phase change: Scarlet Shield

After the first break point on his health bar, Ambrus begins using Scarlet Shield.

This is the most important mechanic in the fight because attacking at the wrong time actively undoes your progress.

Watch for:

  • a diamond-shaped shield indicator below his health bar;
  • the health bar turning grey.

When Scarlet Shield is active, do not hit him. Striking him in this state heals him.

Treat the entire shield window as defense-only. Dodge, maintain lock-on, and wait for the effect to end before resuming Perfect Block and riposte pressure.

If it feels like Ambrus is "randomly healing," Scarlet Shield is the first thing to check.

Final pressure: blood-red teleport flurry

After the second break point, Ambrus adds a much more aggressive sequence: he glows blood red and teleports around Coen while attacking from multiple angles.

This is another phase where greed loses the fight.

Do not chase him through the teleports. Focus on survival until he settles back into his normal move set. Once the flurry ends, return to the same disciplined pattern used earlier: block or riposte normal attacks, dodge unblockables, and punish only the clear recovery windows.

If you used the poison route, this defensive phase is even more favorable because his health can continue dropping while you avoid unnecessary trades.

A simple Ambrus fight plan

If you want one concise strategy, use this:

  1. Lock on and let Ambrus initiate.
  2. Perfect Block his ordinary attacks and answer with Perfect Riposte.
  3. Dodge backward from the spinning overhead attack.
  4. Dodge sideways from the rising slash, then punish once.
  5. Back away from the figure-eight advance.
  6. Stop attacking completely during Scarlet Shield.
  7. Defend through the blood-red teleport flurry.
  8. Reset after every punish instead of extending long combos.

The duel is much easier when you treat it as a defensive skill check rather than a damage race.

Kill Ambrus or drain his blood?

After the duel, the game can give you a choice between draining Ambrus and killing him, provided Coen's condition allows the choice.

Drain Ambrus

Draining him grants Scarlet Shield, increases Corruption, and opens an additional decision about whether to let Ambrus remain with Coen after the Anachora sequence.

PC Gamer describes Scarlet Shield as a very strong vampiric reward because it can heal Coen when he performs Perfect Blocks. That creates obvious synergy with the same defensive loop that works well in the duel itself.

Kill Ambrus

Killing him means you do not gain Scarlet Shield from drinking his blood, but PC Gamer reports that you can still loot his sword and legendary armor set. Killing him also increases Infamy, which can matter for other progression such as Where Loyalty Lies.

PowerPyx lists the quest reward as 500 XP and 1 Skill Point, with Scarlet Shield specifically tied to the drain route.

If you care about build power, draining is the more mechanically distinctive reward. If you are managing Corruption or role-playing a low-feeding route, killing him may fit your run better.

For the larger decision framework, use Choices & Consequences.

Should you invite Ambrus in?

If you drain his blood, an additional choice can appear around whether to let a fragment of Ambrus remain with Coen.

PowerPyx reports that accepting this results in additional Ambrus commentary and later assistance against Brencis, while its checked route did not identify a direct ending penalty. Treat that as a route consequence rather than a universal "best" choice, especially if you are keeping Corruption and role-play decisions consistent across the rest of the run.

Make a manual save before the post-fight choice if you want to compare outcomes yourself.

If the Ambrus fight feels impossible

Check these before rebuilding your entire character:

  • Are you attacking into Scarlet Shield and healing him?
  • Are you trying to block attacks that the game presents as unblockable?
  • Are you extending combos after the safe punish window?
  • Do you have enough stamina to defend through the next sequence?
  • Are you using lock-on through his shadowsteps?
  • Did you skip the poison route even though you are struggling on your current difficulty?

The last point is important: the poison route exists as an in-world solution to the duel. Using it is not "cheesing" a broken boss; it is one of the quest's supported approaches.
